Valediction Contest Judging

Please drop by this wikipage for the contest results.

From www.merriam-webster.com
Main Entry: val·e·dic·tion
Pronunciation: "va-le-'dik-shen
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin valedicere to say farewell, from vale farewell + dicere to say
1 : an act of bidding farewell
2 : VALEDICTORY.

I have designed this contest especially for the benefit of some of our 'dark' writers, but it should be fun for everyone. Get your flying shoes on!

Theme

The idea of this contest is to write a farewell scene. However, this is no ordinary valediction. We will be writing a farewell scene with some very specific themes, so read this section very carefully!.

Here are the thematic rules for the story. If you do not adhere to these rules, I won't even judge your entry. The idea of this is to help you break away from dark writing, and/or expand your horizons into something you may not have done.

1. There shall be no killing, death, dying, blood, demons, illness, cutting, or other similar elements in this story.

2. The story is to be a romance.

3. Any genre, any race is okay.

4. Happy ending, happy progression. No tragedies.

5. Be creative! A valediction, in literature, is a farewell speech. Make sure that you imply to where your person is going.

6. The scene must have only two characters.

1. Both poetry and prose are allowed.

2. Submissions must involve the theme.

3. Original work only, please.

4. Spellcheck and grammar check your work. This time, grammar and spelling errors will hurt your entry's score, so check 'em!

5. 400-2000 words prose, or 8-50 lines of poetry.

6. Respect the work of others.

7. The deadline for this contest is January 25th, 2006. Late entries will not be accepted.

8. Content: Submissions should be clean enough for twelve year olds to read. So profanity, gore, and sexual content should be kept to reasonable levels (although if your entry has gore, you aren't winning anyway ^-^).

9. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: Creativity, adherence to the theme, grammar and spelling, and overall effect.

10. Entries should be in standard paragraph form.

Prizes

I haven't decided yet.

2006-01-14 [chuchutrain]: hitting someone with the back of your hand because you don't get as much force as slapping

2006-01-14 [Kuzco]: I've been meaning to ask...isn't chuey the nickname of Chewbacka from Star Wars?

2006-01-14 [chuchutrain]: .....is it? I don't know...but I know I don't like to be called Chewbaka...it was given to me by a teacher and when he told me about it he worded it really badly...lol ^^;;

2006-01-14 [Mister Saint]: Ah, I see. And I think his was spelled 'Chewey' though I dunno for sure.

2006-01-14 [chuchutrain]: I wouldn't know...the last time I watched star wars was...three or four year ago...

2006-01-14 [Kuzco]: Well, I dunno if you're familiar with the first and oldest trilogy of Star Wars. But Chewbacka is like a cross between a bear and a human. Really ugly, with primal vocal cords and violent. His nickname being...chuey. Just to give a heads up ;)

2006-01-14 [chuchutrain]: yeah I know what Chewbacka was but I didn't know his nickname was Chuey...

2006-01-14 [Mister Saint]: ^^ Bah, he's not all that special. A bag of hair. ^_^

2006-01-15 [Burning Inside]: lol chewbacca was awesome, he was all like "RAHHH" that was like the extent of his lines....besides it just a tall guy in a costume, same with R2 being a short guy in a costume....and C3PO

2006-01-15 [Mister Saint]: Yeah, but imagine how he must've shed. o.O

2006-01-15 [Kuzco]: heh lol...he's just a cute fuzzy ball

2006-01-15 [chuchutrain]: lol fuzz!

2006-01-15 [Burning Inside]: well maybe he never had to shed

2006-01-15 [Mister Saint]: Maybe not. ^_^ By the by, Burning, I spoke to someone about the differences between 'canadian' English and English English. The differences, according to her, are very minor and non-grammatical. The spelling conventions are pretty limited too, so I think we're covered.

2006-01-15 [Burning Inside]: ok well I go by the Microsoft word thingy and it says I have no errors

2006-01-15 [Mister Saint]: What are you talking about? What has no errors?

2006-01-15 [Mister Saint]: I might be tempted to push the deadline on this contest forward, for a couple of reasons. First, I think I need to judge one of these to get the wrinkles ironed out of my judging criteria. Second, we need a winner's name in the 'contest winners' thingy on the Flipside Contest Section. Third... I think we've got all our entrants for this one. ^^ Now, if any one of you would rather I didn't, then I won't. But if you all agree that it would be good to judge sooner, I'll move the deadline up till like... tomorrow. Thoughts?

2006-01-15 [Kuzco]: Got no problem with that.

2006-01-15 [Burning Inside]: ok fine by me

2006-01-15 [chuchutrain]: I don't have aany problem with it :)

2006-01-15 [Mister Saint]: Then I will begin judging today. ^_^ It might take a little while, as I plan to be as thorough as I can so that we all learn as much as possible. ^^ In the meantime, if anyone wants to enter before I submit my results, that's fine.
